Job Description

This individual will teach special education with a concentration in English Language Arts grades 6-12.  Under the general direction of the Principal of the Campus School; carries out all job responsibilities with fidelity and accountability to the Agency’s Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and Strategic Plan.




    • Exercises full compliance with the Agency’s Code of Conduct, all Agency policies and procedures and Federal and State laws and regulations.
    • Manages student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
    • Maintains productive learning environment within the classroom and school building.
    • Maintains current knowledge in ELA, Literacy and Common Core implementation as well as, special education field. 
    • Develops appropriate ELA curriculum and works collaboratively with curriculum specialist to align content with other subject area(s). 
    • Ability to assist in IEP’s, report cards, transcripts, treatment team reports and other written records as needed within the school
    • Uses and incorporates relevant technology to support instruction. 
    • Maintain a current knowledge base in several areas: curriculum and instruction, best practice in education, strategies for school improvement, effective management and communication strategies, knowledge of federal and State regulations.
    • Experience in administering and scoring all state exams preferred.
  • Demonstrates, promotes and practices cultural sensitivity towards students and staff through respect and understanding achieved through training and Agency cultural activities. 
  • Implements materials that support cultural diversity and understanding.
  • Creates and instructs students in a variety of ways that promotes all levels and learning styles.
  • Prepares lesson plans and instructional material with attention to NYS curriculum and the individual needs of students. 
  • Ability to engage students on multiple levels using various strategies both on an individual bases and in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff in the Campus School and Avalon program.
  • Evaluates and recommends instructional materials.
  • Maintains awareness of current treatment plans, IEP goals and other important information needed for individual needs.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports.
  • Attends treatment conferences and CSE/504 meetings as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Campus and Avalon teachers.
  • Ability to work with multiple Villa of Hope personnel, outside agencies and families to provide accurate and timely feedback
  • Support and monitor professional development opportunities in the community and school.



Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor degree (mandatory), Master’s degree preferred.   Special Education certification preferred.  ELA certification recommended.  Experience/knowledge of Fountas and Pinnell preferred.


  • Relevant teaching experience (three years minimum)
  • Self-motivated, strong verbal and writing skills, attention to detail, problem-solving, flexible and adaptable.
  • Able to implement current technology within the classroom

Able to complete and maintain TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training in order to maintain a safe educational environment for students and staff
